I agree with this approach and support the idea of using the Coast Guard more in international waters. We can maintain a presence and avoid giving China any ability to whine or compose rhetorical claims regarding us being the provocateur. Now, where's that white paint for the BB's, I mean, BB-class Coast Guard cutters?

The US Coast Guard has been involved in international naval operations for over 100 years. Our white hulls would be in a stronger position to project US influence in the South China Seas if our merchant fleet was larger. We need to increase the number for flags flying on cargo ships. This can be done through regulation, not changes of laws. If US flag vessels are engaging in trade with China or SE Asia, then the USCG can justify full time presence in currently disputed offshore islands and surrounding waters.

Hmm... when the Coasties take on international roles are they truly a ‘Coast Guard’ any longer? A cutter doesn’t have much of a punch... they’d be fighting WAY out of their class in a confrontation.

Sgt Wayne Wood - We do a fair amount of LE training for other countries and our CT, Counter Narcotics and Anti Piracy guys have some skills. You are absolutley correct regarding our cutter fleet's armament.

Sgt Wayne Wood ... apparently assisting in guarding everybody else's coasts, too. Should we be surprised that the service confused as the police of our waters are policing others? Why, when our military plays policemen to the globe, too? Have to wonder if the world would or wouldn't implode upon itself if we weren't involved everywhere. But that's not the point of this discussion... does Gannet have a "Coast Guard Times " or even include the Coast Guard in the "Military Times"? I know everyone just loves the media, but it IS there to be used. Like the Coast Guard, it's there to be used. Might be a start?
