For a break from the Lunacy and Circus of the Presidential Election a WWII Combat Vet Marine laments where we are as a country. I found his words wistful and a little sad coming from one of the Greatest Generation. I often think about my KIA WWII Maternal grandfather, and how he did not get to live a full life, and watch his kids grow up with his loving guidance. I feel the responsibility to live a good life to honor his memory and the sacrifice he made and so many other Americans made in WWII (16 Million served in WWII to give us the country and the world that we have now). Ben Franklin once reportedly said, "You have a country now if you can keep it."(The deliberations of the Constitutional Convention of 1787 were held in strict secrecy. Consequently, anxious citizens gathered outside Independence Hall when the proceedings ended in order to learn what had been produced behind closed doors. The answer was provided immediately. A Mrs. Powel of Philadelphia asked Benjamin Franklin, “Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?” With no hesitation whatsoever, Franklin responded, “A republic, if you can keep it.” ) I believe the WWII Generation gave us a Chance at a better Country and a Better world, "if we could keep it."
Whether it is the amazing and depressing debt we have racked up in our deficit spending, or the income disparity and the way the Wealth of this Country is so inequitably spread out among Americans, or just the fact that Americans are so fractious and divided, that we can barely agree on anything anymore, I am sure the Spirits of the Men and Women who sacrificed so much for us in WWII are looking on, and wondering if this is what they gave their lives for????
