After spending a ton of money on these folks, the least they could do is fulfill their obligations to the country that gave them the best education.

Yep, this is wrong. Roger Staubach did his service and then had a great pro career. If these guys want an excellent education on Uncle Sam's dime, then they owe their service immediately after graduation. What if they get hurt playing pro ball? How can they repay their debt of service if they are physically disabled? It's not all about going pro and getting a lot of money.
