Thousands of National Guardsmen who’ve been rotating to the U.S.-Mexico border since 2018 are supposed to go home for good by Sept. 30, the chief of the National Guard Bureau told lawmakers on Tuesday, but because the Homeland Security Department wants that mission to continue, they could be replaced by active-duty troops.
All options are on the table, Army Gen. Daniel Hokanson said, but a Pentagon spokesman declined to confirm Wednesday that active-duty troops are under consideration.

Some would argue protecting our borders does fall under the realm of our oath. But you do make a valid point that it does appear to be a political/policy move only and not one of national defense.

If they are let's make sure someone in charge makes sure everyone points their weapons INTO Mexico.

The last time they did that during the Clinton Administration the RECON MARINES shot a kid to death in Texas because they thought the stick he was carrying was a rifle being pointed at them. The DoD ignored the request those involved stay in Texas until Texas could start and complete an investigation and they were flown out in a rush back to California. So we only have the Marine Corps version of events to this day. Very sad story.
