From what I have read, these groups are not very effective. If you can convince a young person to abstain from feelings that felt natural to him / her, if they later have difficulty adjusting, they would tend to feel that their parents / church are not supportive of who they feel they are. Like if you do what I think is right, I will love you.
I don't think we need to think that being gay or whatever is a good thing. It is kind of hard for me to imagine, but in doing some intake work at mental health clinics, I have gotten to know a 2-3 people going through this kind of change or counseling, and they are as good as anyone else, and are not acceptable to many people. I don't think they just cooked up this idea to be different. Their brain biology is different in a way not much is known about.
They are present in most or all societies that a lot are known about. In some Native American tribes they are considered to have special abilities that can be made honorable use of- that is - those tribes do not expect everyone to conform to the same mold.
If there were a ban, it should not automatically be punitive to a church. There should be evidence that it is harming the individuals and the minister or counselors should have known it was potentially dangerous to a person's mental health.
I know many will not agree, that is fine.
