Get the friggin Jarheads back in charge of security at south submarine bases. The idea that this could happen at a base with nuclear weapons is the height of incompetency. Fire the base CO and head of security.

In all honesty Master Chief, can we hold the CO responsible for this? I’m not justifying it one way or the other. It clearly was a breech but is it a breech where the CO could’ve prevented it? I’m wondering are they teens, young adults(20 something), or... former Sailors or workers from there who knew the security protocols? I can see bringing the crayon eaters back, but the Navy has their MA’s. Why not give them added responsibility? I could be wrong but isn’t every post using a combination of military LEOs and either contractor/government procured LEOs?

SSG Warren Swan It’s been a long time since I’ve even visited a military facility, but all I saw post retirement were rent-a-cops. As for the MAA Rating was reestblished in 1973 about five years before I retired. None existed on the subs or sub bases then. We were well behaved as opposed to surface craft, I suppose. Seriously, never saw one during my 21 years of service, we just had Shore Patrol, and if in Hawaii, HASP. And yes, I’m a believer the CO is responsible for the security of his/her command. The saying, a captain goes down with his ship, means more than the statement implies. That, also is an anachronism. Now, the standard is find someone else to blame.

MCPO Roger Collins - 21 years and you retired as a Master Chief? I know we've spoken before about how you made it, but I thought you had done closer to 30! Daymn you made it quick!!! I never knew the MAA field was ever done away with. There's nothing wrong with what you said. I've heard it with Army commanders "you're responsible for everything that happens under your watch". It's not a far out ideal. As far as visiting a military facility....you're not missing much. I used to go all the time to get either medical, commissary, or the PX. Now, I try not to be bothered. I think it took time to let go and see there is more than a post out there.

SSG Warren Swan My last two promotions came as a surprise. Tried to make E-8 for five years, then it happened. Don’t know how well you know the Navy system, but I was in the last bunch promoted, and in the first group of E-9 selected. I still have my brand new E-8 devices. The big surprise was that, my personality was as it is today. My shopping has changed a lot since retirement, I never use base exchanges and commissaries. Better prices and quality merchandise at Kroger and Amazon. Both treat you as a customer, rather than an annoyance. Take care, Rog
