Thanks for sharing SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL I just went through a VBA evaluation for an appeal from last summer. The advice from the big guy only makes sense of the process sis working - it has never worked well consistently in my experience.
A. I had three copies of all my military medical records which was very helpful.
B. I went through the VFW to apply for my VA disability. I highly recommend using ne of the Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs) to help you apply for VA disability.
1.) Know exactly how the disability process works for both the VA and the DoD
2.) Know exactly how your conditions are rated [military uses 10 USC while VA uses 38 USC]
3.) Go to the doctor for EVERY condition you have [ensure your medical records are complete. Exit physicals are important. I had an exit physical when I demobilized in 2004 but not when I transferred to the Retired Reserve in 2008.]
4.) Get complete copies of your medical records [have multiple copies - paper, hard drives, thumb drives; etc.
5.) Make an appointment for your initial VA C&P exam as soon as possible [use one of the Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs) to assist you when you apply for disability.]
6.) Make sure that the VA has all of your past medical records and pertinent service records [ the VBA will have copies of what you submit. the VA treatment facilities generally won't. The treatment facilities will do their own exams once you are rated as disabled. the VBA will do their own exams.
7.) Make sure that the VA physician performs all the proper tests to rate your condition.
8.) Get copies of all your VA exams. [you will need to request your VA treatment medical records in writing and the same for your VBA assessment records.]
9.) Submit all the necessary information if applying for claims or appealing a rating decision [in my case my symptoms changed for the worse which seems to be helping my appeal. It is good when the VBA evaluation doctor can see that your health has deteriorated from your previous rating.]
10.) Be proactive
Do not file an appeal or a new claim within one year of a previous claim unless some serious has happened.

Review 38 CFR Book C, Schedule for Rating Disabilities, with a fine toothed comb. This is what the VA uses to determine percentage for each disability. http://www.benefits.va.gov/warms/bookc.asp

Having recently been through and completed this process, this is very good information for those who might be just starting the IDES or MEB Process, or just the VA claims process in general. Thanks for posting.
