The attack last July on a recruiting office in Tennessee has prompted the Air Force to remind commanders they may authorize qualified airmen to carry weapons on base while off duty and out of uniform.
The Air Force on Wednesday said its review of "active-shooter incidents across the country" found that many ended without police intervention because someone present with a weapon stopped the shooter.
Three programs authorize commanders at all levels -- as long as they have authorization from the base commander -- to allow conceal-carry or open-carry on the installation.
"None of these programs gives the installation commander authorizations they didn't already have the authorization to do," Maj. Keith Quick, the Air Force Security Forces Integrated Defense action officer, said. "We are now formalizing it and telling them how they can use these types of programs more effectively."

I am all for it for properly trained personnel. If they are willing to go the extra mile to get the enhanced training, then I say let them have it. The Dyess AFB commander last week authorized conceal carry for properly trained personnel as long as they leave it in their car. Positive step in my mind. The question is asked below about Security teams arriving at active shooter scenario. If they are properly trained they know to drop the weapon and yield to Security Forces anyway...if they Gomer Pyle it and start pointing guns back at the cops well the shallow end of the gene pool effect will takes its course. I routinely leave work and go other places at night before I go home. As of now on my installation, I cannot carry at all. I have the enhanced carry training which means I can take my gun everywhere but in a court room or police station...but still can't bring it on the installation. I hope this goes well because If I am not mistaken the numbers prove it...where legal weapons are, the gun crime is lower.

If the mi,Italy is doing their weapons training correctly with their people and that person has also gone through the concealed carry courses then they should not need any further “enhanced training”. They already have more training than most civilians with concealed carry licenses. To me it’s degrading to tell our warriors they can have a gun overseas to shoot in war zones but we don’t trust you in life back in the states. Or to tell the military police you can carry a gun on duty on post but we don’t trust you off duty. That is degrading to the great men and women who serve this country. Makes a post a much safer place for someone to commit a crime or terrorist act because they know no one can carry a gun there.

No, I am an Army vet. I served my last year in the NY Air National Guard and I can say. The Air Force is VERY forward thinking. The Army seems to be stuck in a thinking loop. It will take the Army another 5 to 10 years to say "Hey, that's a good idea!" I love the Army about a lot of things, but, progressive thinking is not one of the things the upper echelons are good at.

I will I would say the AF is forward thinking. I was just on Lackland and they have done a 180 on this issue under presser from the far left and changed there policy.
