That is interesting that this makes news PO1 William "Chip" Nagel on NPR. From what I remember over the years there has been waves of hate crimes for many years - from Muslims targeting British military personnel to neo-nazi's to black on south Asian. etc.

SGT Gregory Lawritson - in Northern Ireland the British police carry firearms but in England, Scotland and Wales they don't carry firearms as a general rule.

LTC Stephen F. - Half Right, The Sergeants in the Vehicles have guns in the Trunks that is something new that has happened since I left. They are very Leary about breaking them out though and with the Minimal Amount of Violent Crime and so very little involving Firearms (Only the Very Rich Generally Have Firearms) it is not really an issue.

SGT Gregory Lawritson - Although Unarmed I can tell you from Personal Experience that a 4 ft nothing Female Bobbie thumping you or more correctly driving the heel of her hand into your chest will drive you back a few feet. One did it to me and the Marine Security Detachment Marine at the Entrance Desk thought it was the coolest thing he had seen that day.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel - I try to be careful with my words which is why I said the British, Scottish and Welsh police officers did not "carry" firearms.
They have SWAT forces just like we do who are armed to the teeth. The police who don't walk a beat that have access to police vehicles certainly have an array of weapons and non-lethal equipment for dealing with a variety of situations. :-)

It is a shame that once an event happens that can divide people, this is the sort of reaction that happens. There is good news though! There are supporters of the minorities in Britain. They show their support by wearing a safety pin on their clothing to show that they are 'safe' to be able to talk to. They're supposed to also help diffuse hate crimes (the simple ones), and talk to the victim afterwards to show that their nation is not just full of horrible cretins.

Thank You for that Enlightenment Lt Matthews. I served for 4 years as a Guest of Her Majesty's Government 3 yrs in London 1 yr in Diego Garcia and I have always thought very well of the Brits I knew and they spoiled this Foreigner Rotten.
