PO1 William "Chip" Nagel So why did it take the news media to get this Marine mental help? I'll tell you what I think. Way back when I was in the Corps overseas a buddy was super overstressed and obviously had what we now call PTSD. He wanted help but the superiors made him feel like a "pussy" because he was having difficulty dealing with what we saw and what he was going through. Rather than continue requesting the silenced him by making him feel inferior and not worthy of the title, "Marine." It wouldn't surprise me if the same thing happened here. I hate to say it but I don't think our military leadership considers mental health important. That could also explain all the suicides in Norfolk the last year or so.

Side note: I don't know the answer to this, so I'll throw it out there for anyone who does. Does the military have mental health services, and are they readily available to spouses of those in uniform to deal with the depression and mental health issues when they husband/wife are deployed and not available to comfort them? See, this issue didn't concern me because when I was deployed I wasn't married. Hell, I didn't even have a girlfriend! I got the Dear John that never came! I only found oot what was going on when I wrote her sister. Many guys got letters from their girlfriends/spouse who was having a very difficult time with the separation.
