I suspect that we who serve/served understand "iconography" better than most. The military lives by it. Banners led us into battle in earlier times and saving the flag from falling was often more important than killing the enemy. We have all worn badges identifying our branch and unit. Other badges express our accomplishments. Many of these badges are important tools in unifying us and our efforts. Sadly, iconography can be used for less honorable purposes as explained in this video
