Agency: Government workers could do painting or carpentry work to help pay rent during shutdown

Really, carpentry? Right on. Because sooo many people have enough carpentry skills at the level that would warrant other people paying them (ie: professional). So the government apparently employs a bunch of professional level carpenters who just moonlight as civil servants.

I appreciate the OPM trying to think outside of the box with the idea of a ‘side hustle’. But what about 2nd or 3rd level effects. 800,000 laid off federal employees suddenly pitching their carpentry skills. How many actual carpenters lose business/go out of business because nearly a million desperate new workers just hit the market, willing to work for hold over money?

What’s next? The OPM will recommend selling blood/eggs/sperm? Taking a federal school loan in order to go to a for-profit tech school to become a Cobbler?

There are ways of responding to a government shutdown. The government has chosen one of the worst ones.

Maybe as the full time employer the Government should get their act together and not make victims of the actual people who do work. It just shows how little they actually care about the Federal employees. It anyone should have to have their pay delayed it should be the members of congress. Seems all of them aren't doing a very good job anyway.
