Wow SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL I have been through a lot of colonoscopies, at least two upper-GI endoscopies as well as two trans-esophageal echocardiograms and had some complications but never any significant infections.
I am sad that a number of patients who had a GI endoscopy at the Air Force Academy school's medical clinic and the Veterans Affairs Eastern Colorado Health Care System from June through September have become infected.
The fact that at least five veterans tested positive for HIV, 25 contracted hepatitis C and eight developed hepatitis B seems to indicate that the problem may have been more acute at Veterans Affairs Eastern Colorado Health Care System clinic.
First in order for HIV, hepatitis B, & C to be transmitted a patient who had been scoped must have had the infection in order for it to transmitted to somebody else. I hope that due diligence is performed because I expect at least the HIV patients contracted HIV some other way unless a warm scope was taken from an infected patient and used on somebody else very soon afterwards.
""Scientists and medical authorities agree that HIV does not survive well outside the body, making the possibility of environmental transmission remote. HIV is found in varying concentrations or amounts in blood, semen, vaginal fluid, breast milk, saliva, and tears."
