$15 million to kill some low-level ISIS fighters and collect no intelligence. How do we decide when the juice is worth the squeeze? Also, my understanding that the MOAB is an air-burst weapon (hence the AB), so how effective would this really be on an underground cave complex?

Back when they we're proposing MOAB, my understanding was that it was primarily specifically intended as a weapon for tunnel and cave complexes. As long as they did not have blast doors capable of withstanding the pressure; if it was detonated anywhere near an opening or an air intake or exhaust, the over pressure turned anyone in the complex into marmalade with a skeleton.

Russia has been bragging since 2007 that they have the Father of All Bombs (FOAB), that due to a different explosive is supposed to have 4 times the 11 ton TNT equivalent of GBU-43 and double the blast radius of 300 vice 150 meters. It's allegedly thermobaric in design. They also made claims i.e. "The Threat" during the Cold War that caused Sec. Navy Lehman to push for a 600 ship Navy. The truth was that they weren't able to pay their soldiers and ships were rusting in port because they couldn't afford paint. I saw some of the remains at Paldiski Port in Estonia, their former Baltic Navy nuke sub base.

SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL What makes you say it was a "good call for the nation"? Was the juice in this case worth the squeeze? How did this reduce the threat to the nation from ISIS? Was that reduction worth $15 million?

You close up the rate lines and tunnels , this is where they are breaching in from Pakistan. The MOAB is and was designed to blow tunnels and doors in underground facilities. I would rather spend money on that, than SOF troops doing CQB tunnel clearing, and save our brothers lives for more worth while missions. How does it reduce the threat well when they start seeing this, they will think twice about Joining the organization and now they are thinking about that coming at them, and defense instead of offense.
