Actually we have been in a Cold war as opposed to a hot war with Russia for some time COL Mikel J. Burroughs. In Syria and Iraq the Russians have unified command under an Army COL GEN who serves as the senior diplomat in Syria - Col. Gen. Alexander Dvornikov. The Russians have the distinct advantage of internal communication lines in the Middle East. They learned their lessons in the North Caucasus as well as in Afghanistan in the 1980s.
We on the other hand have dawdled around Air Superiority as the dominant factor in a ground and air [communications] war and against a non-state actor [ISIL] that rules by personal terror.
Our dance with the Iranian military is also a cold war - yesterday's incident with our small boats "drifting" into Iranian waters reminds me of so many cold way european accidental transgressions.
