I would think staying behind and not abandoning a fellow crewmen who was stuck in the plane is pretty noble. It also says that the nature of those awards will not be revealed until the day of the ceremony. Sounds like the AF is not going to release to the press but they will be read at the ceremony.

Thank you for this story! Even though I subscribe to the aviationist, I missed the story! Thank you!

The exact citations that the crewmembers will receive will remain part of their own personal records and will not be made public by the Air Force, Gradishar said, adding that service plans on releasing additional details of the incident following the July 13th medal ceremony.

Ok a medal ceremony, but the exact medal and citation are to remain private, do I have that right?

How do you give the award without reading the citation ? If I read that right the Air Force is a strange beast.

Sounds like the female truck driver in an Army convoy in Afghanistan who received a Bronze Star because she broke her leg in a crash. The militaries are passing out medals like candy, anymore.
