For me the line in the sand was a defining and dissapointing moment when nothing was done and will tarnish the administrations Foreign Policy legacy.

SFC George Smith Cpl Joshua Caldwell and LTC Orlando Illi I'm curious as how any of you feel Obama should have handled Syria. When Obama wanted to do to help Syrians getting killed by Al Assad, John Boehner and Congress said that anything regarding the military had to go through them. Then when Obama agreed and sought Congressional approval, and I wish I were joking, Congress did an instant kick turn and said Obama was weak BECAUSE he sought Congressional approval (I found the article and it's a frustrating and angering to see now as it was then). So what was Obama supposed to do when faced with this type of opposition? Where one party wouldn't give him anything even when it's what they said they wanted?

Obama sought Congressional approval because the Syrians called his bluff. He had the legal authority to act under the War Powers Act. He didn't because he did not want to be responsible for sending American assets into war.

He already had the authority to act under the War Powers Act. He was looking fir political covet that Congress didn't give him. Obama said don't cross the red line. The Syrians called his bluff. I learned along time ago as a 2LT - if you are going to play poker with the big boys you better put on your big boy pants. Obama bluffed ans got called and choked.

He could have used the war powers act like he and every pres in my lifetime has used, but he didnt because he didnt want to go into Syria. He foolishly painted himself into a corner with his tough talk about a red line, then he bitched out and backed away from the red line, thus losing all credibility. Wait another 20 years of so and you will see where the chemical weapons came from, that is about the time frame for that to declassify. It actually gets worse when you look into the pipeline going through that area, and how it affected Russia, again obama stated a fight then backed way when it came his way. Proving on the world stage that he was all talk, which in turn undermined our standing in the region. that gave Iran, Russia, and ISIS alll the iniative over our leadership. If he had any sense or listened to his military advisors, he would have never got involved in Sryia at all, we have no dog in that fight. Two factions who hate us are killing each other. Let them kill each other. The only function we have in that theater is securing the Iraqi boarder (maybe) and setting up a humanitarian zone for fleeing refugees to keep ISIS contained and out of Europe while gaining intel an various unfriendly groups.
