When the article says Ms. Paul was arrested and imprisoned for seven months, etc., I believe she was imprisoned in the workhouse (a form of prison) at Woodbridge, VA. From what I've read, the suffragettes were treated quite brutally at this installation in an attempt by the authorities to break their spirits. Later the workhouse became the District of Columbia prison until the late 20th century; when it was closed, the prisoners were dispersed to various federal prisons. Now the former workhouse/prison is an arts and crafts center and a designated historic site, well worth seeing if you're in the area. It is located on State Route 123 just north of I-95 in Occoquan.
