UUCP (unix to unix copy), back to back modems connecting one server platform to another. The start of UUNET which was the great grand-father of the internet was built on those modems. 490-L switch formally known as AUTOVON carried voice and data traffic back in the beginning also relied on them.

Brings back some memories and we thought 56k was fast..
