Anyone interested in reading war history? I highly recommend the work of Jeff Shaara. I've read countless novels from wars of every period and none do it better than him. He has touched on the American Revolution, the American Civil War, the Mexican-American War, World War I, World War II, and now Korea. His books are well researched and eminently readable. His latest, The Frozen Hours, deals with Fox Company of the US Marines fighting at the Chosin Reservoir. Coincidentally, I am a member of the Bill Barbor Post of the American Legion in Irvine, CA. Barbor was the commander of Fox Company at the time and it's especially interesting to get insight into his exploits. An honest study of the Korean War exposes the dangers that nations and military forces face when their commanders become so powerful that sycophants protect them from their own foibles. General MacArthur does not come out looking well in this story inasmuch as he was fed the intelligence he wanted to hear that led him to believe that he could simply march to the Yalu River without serious threat. Shaara is brutally honest in exposing this side of him. As he points out, the President and the Chiefs of Staff were afraid of MacArthur and failed to rein in his hubris as he ordered thousands into indefensible positions. Like I said, "brutally honest"...
