As our system is designed now, I don't see much success of any additional parties. We try every election, but with no major success. Congress is designed to operate with 2 parties, majority and minority. The Speaker and the Senate Majority are selected by the members. How much authority would either have if they were elected with a small number of votes because there were a dozen parties voting?
We have the messiest, ugliest, divisive system possible, but it is far and above whatever is in second place.

It has happened before, though not additional parties, in the 1850s for example the Whig party essentially imploded and the Republican party birthed over the issue of slavery. I suspect we are at least seeing a major shift in one of our major parties. I don't want to make this political, so I'll leave it at that.

I agree, I have a serious issue with what would be a parliamentary type of government. Israel for example has had three elections in about 18 months.
