I wonder if the ROE will change in a couple of months.
“I am deeply saddened by the news on this Thanksgiving Day that one of our brave service members has been killed in Syria while protecting us from the evil of ISIL,” Defense Secretary Ash Carter said in a statement, using one of the names for the Islamic State. “It is a painful reminder of the dangers our men and women in uniform face around the world to keep us safe.”

It's good to remember that the US is not engaged in war fighting combat operations in Syria. We are only there to support forces fighting Daesh and Assad. This man should not have died because in a support role, he was supposedly far enough removed from actual fighting to become a casualty. It should be some consolation to his family that Ash did say he died while protecting US from the evil of ISIL.

ROE is not consistent with the type of war we are engaged in. We need to rethink how we conduct war or get out.
