Thanks SGT John " Mac " McConnell for reminding us that other USA citizens besides the famous Lafayette Escadrille volunteered in the great war. While the Lafayette Escadrille were combat pilots, the American volunteer ambulance drivers were non-combat.
My paternal grandfather William John Field Ford and his brother served in the British Army Expeditionary infantry in the trench warfare of the Great War in France and Belgium.
All enlisted records of the British Army were destroyed by German bombs during the Battle of Britain in WWII. We known my grandfather was wounded but don't know anything else. Perhaps he was assisted by the American volunteer ambulance drivers.
