Hasn't service always followed family lines? My son is the third generation in my family, but even if I look at other service oriented professions, the police and firemen, I see a lot of people in those professions that are not first generation either. I agree that there is a danger in the disconnect between the people that fight the war and those that start them, but we see that even on the civil side today. As an example, look at Baltimore where the City Administration has been part in actively demonizing the police force, even though it's cost them a murder rate that makes Baghdad look safe. I think if you look historically at periods between major wars, the services always shrank and the majority of those that stayed or joined were from a core of families that had always traditionally served.
