Let's be clear. China has more, much more to lose by playing these games. We're fools, Canada and the US, if we allow ourselves to be bluffed. If China doesn't want its citizens, especially "important" citizens, arrested and detained, it shouldn't send them here to commit crimes.

The PRC are cut from the same cloth as NoKO. They are all brigands. A rich brigand is still a brigand. China's current strategic and economic position puts the US in a very precarious position. Many presidents both Democrat and Republican have contributed to this situation. If we can aid alternate markets in Asia and assist them in developing a manufacturing base we can begin to take food from China's mouth. If we check their strategic moves in this hemisphere by invoking the Monroe Doctrine and refuse to accept the status quo in the South China Sea, that will also help. Lets figure out a way to get back to the PI as a site to establish forward operating bases, then aid in the development of Vietnam and India as future economic super powers. India is already half there and since Pakistan has proven itself to be our enemy, lets wean India from the eastern communist bloc by providing them with superior weapons systems at a very attractive price point. From the PI we can reasonably project power into the area and shortstop PRC militarism in SE Asia and the Western Pacific.
Yes it will be very expensive. If we don't invest now however, we will be speaking Mandarin as a second language by 2101.

Without Canada and the US, just exactly what is China's market? Please don't say Europe because they are way down the chain of China's major customers.

Cynthia Croft So would I, but I fear that is a long time off. Their investments in what we term third world countries is a very smart move IMO that will assure markets for years to come.

Cynthia Croft - The problem with that hope is the PRC takes a very long view of their strategic interests. They are extremely patient. Where we (and most western nations) might think in terms of decades, they will be looking at the very least a hundred years into the future. They get a toe hold in an area (one that we will have most likely ignored) and slowly build a group of influential locals that actively or passively support PRC economic and political goals in the region.
