Memorial day is the last day of Scarborough Faire this year in Waxahachie, Texas. It is a Renaissance faire that covers the time of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. The faire also has crafts, artisans , Jousting and so on from the year's 1501 to 1600. But today in history something very tragic. On the morning of Friday 19 May, Anne Boleyn was executed within the Tower precincts, not upon the site of the execution memorial, but rather, according to historian Eric Ives, on a scaffold erected on the north side of the White Tower, in front of what is now the Waterloo Barracks. She wore a red petticoat under a loose, dark grey gown of damask trimmed in fur and a mantle of ermine. Accompanied by two female attendants, Anne made her final walk from the Queen's House to the scaffold and she showed a "devilish spirit" and looked "as gay as if she was not going to die". Anne climbed the scaffold and made a short speech to the crowd:
Good Christian people, I am come hither to die, for according to the law, and by the law I am judged to die, and therefore I will speak nothing against it. I am come hither to accuse no man, nor to speak anything of that, whereof I am accused and condemned to die, but I pray God save the king and send him long to reign over you, for a gentler nor a more merciful prince was there never: and to me he was ever a good, a gentle and sovereign lord. And if any person will meddle of my cause, I require them to judge the best. And thus I take my leave of the world and of you all, and I heartily desire you all to pray for me. The wives of Henry VII are the stuff of legend SGT John " Mac " McConnell.
1. Catherine of Aragon m. 1509 - 1533 Divorced after the Church of England broke from Roman Catholicism so that henry VII could divorce Catherine to marry Anne Boleyn; ;
2. Anne Boleyn m. 1533 - 1536 Mother of Elizabeth who would be Queen who did not bear a son and was executed;
3. Jane Seymour m. 1536 - 1537 There has been much written over whether or not Jane gave birth to Edward by cesarean section. It seems unlikely that if she had, she would have lived as long as she did after the birth. Jane attended her son's christening, although she was weak. She died on October 24th, just two weeks after her son was born. Henry had already been preparing his own tomb at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, which was where Jane was buried. In the end, she would be the only of Henry's six wives to be buried with him;
4. Anne of Cleves m. 1540 Jan. - July Divorced;
5. Kathryn Howard m. 1540 - 1542 Executed; and
6. Katherine Parr m. 1543 - 1547 outlived the King to be Widowed.
