Santa Ana winds are fanning the flames for sure. The mountain passes channel the wind, making it even worse.

ALL fires are living, breathing monsters, particularly wildland fires. They can create their own microclimate independent of the weather conditions around them. California still has a lot of people and businesses in the wildland-urban interface, and without adequate firebreaks, those places can be over-run by fire. When environmentalists block prescribed or controlled burns, the undergrowth contributes far more flammable material to the fire than the forest itself would.

SN Donald Hoffman - He did it all, from structural to wildland and everything in between. He was on the ground in NYC the day after the twin-towers fell with a USAR task-force from south Florida. We lost him in July 2018 from the results of using and abusing his body for over 25 years in the fire service.

I wonder if the Federal Government has a forward leaning posture. I would be extremely disappointed if DHS and FEMA are just leaning back. The federal government did an extensive AAR of Hurricane Katrina, but I have no idea if we learned our lessons.

How it should work is DHS takes the lead, FEMA provides funds, 5th Army coordinates military assets and coordination with the state(s). One example of preparing for a disaster is to fly out all the ambulatory patients to safer areas.

SFC Bernard Walko - You are on point. Some state governors don't want help like Texas several years ago in dealing with a Hurricane. Some governor's should ask for help when their capacity to deal with a disaster is overwhelmed. In NOLA it took a 3 star army general to land in NOLA, spit, cursed and took control. We learned several things like we should have evacuated all of NOLA, all the patients in hospitals, and what did they want the military to do.
