That area of Africa is vast. I'm not sure how anything is going to change on the ground.
If it was me, I would stay close to the rivers for water and fish. But not too close due to large creatures. Perhaps, water wells would help with good will and gain information on Islamic bases. Place ears in Mosques.

A good friend of mine is a senior NCO in the Austrian Army and did a EU tour in Mali. A very different war being waged there than the one the US was attempting.
