Social Security was a "stop-gap measure" (not a forever program) to help people cope with the costs of retirement. Once upon a time, few people outlived their useful working lives. However, when greater numbers began living longer, they were not prepared to support themselves in retirement and Social Security was created to help them while younger workers were encouraged to begin saving for retirement. Of course they didn't and tax breaks for Individual Retirement Accounts were created to encourage them. When people began shifting jobs rather than working for one employer all their lives, 401K plans were created to make employer-sponsored retirement accounts portable. Again, Congress (speaking on behalf of We the People) were encouraging individual responsibility. President Biden's proposal (or whomever is really behind it) is seeking to replace individual responsibility with the nanny-state approach. Some call it socialism. I prefer to liken it to slavery...
