If there are that many vacant or underused buildings, turn them into mental health centers and/or homeless shelters.

A couple of those empty buildings are here at Ft. Meade VA. I think they were warehouses or something. Of course, there is much more to Ft Meade that just the VA.

If they are being used as warehouses by an organization, DA or VA, then I wouldn't categorize them as either vacant or under utilized if the storage space is truly needed and being used productively as active storage. But if it's storing crap that needs to be disposed of, well that falls into my fraud and waste question.

I think you will find that the VA is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of vacant and under-utilized buildings in the federal government's inventory. Once Uncle Sam has something on his property book, it is harder than hell to get him to give it up ... and even when he is willing to let it go, there is invariably some congresscritter that wants it kept ... because it is a source of federal spending in his district/state.

I agree. I've seen all the vacant, abandoned buildings on Knox, Riley, and Bliss as new infrastructure was built. Cheaper to let fall to disrepair than paying to tear it down they say but doesn't explain why federal funding is going to any of those buildings. That is what I'm asking to be scrutinized and accountability on the VA, Congressmen, local politicians, Veteran Groups, etc.; whomever is responsible for the fraud and waste. Especially if the money went on the books but was actually used for something else.

MAJ James Woods - Indirectly it does explain it. When you own a lot of property (forget military bases - think in cities and local communities) that property has to be secured, maintained, and serviced by utilities. The only way to duck that responsibility and associated cost is to ... get the property off the books, something Uncle Sam doesn't do very often or well. That is what Shulkin is looking to do though. For the new HMFIC at the VA, it is a newsworthy goal.

@LTC J G W, from the rundown vacant bldgs I've seen on Knox and Bliss, they better not be wasting resources on security and maintenance. They look so bad they need to be torn down.
