"US politics could undermine science"? Absolutely true. American politicians have been spending the nation's wealth for their own purposes (to remain in office) for decades now and there's little left in the coffers for Rolls Royce research programs. I guess we'll just have to wait for a new breed of scientists, the kind that are driven by their intelligence and creativity, and able to make do with what's available, to feed the growth of knowledge, out of love, not avarice. Also, it'll help if we stop squandering what's left on PC science, like Climate Change.

Yes. Ethical science requires ethical scientists. Politics can undermine science by attempting to advocate and fund politically chosen topics or outcomes. This places scientists in the terrible position of either studying objectively within their field (with little to no funding) or moving to a new field and selecting only government approved hypothesis (e.g., AGW).
