Are China's South China Sea Bases Pointless?

They may help for a while but it seem they are pretty vulnerable and small size of the island would make them pretty hard to configure as very survivable in any attack on those facilities. Mother nature may even do the job, there isn't anything anyone can do to control Her. China might rare better if they weren't getting up in the faces of their neighboring countries and claiming the South china Sea as their own. Maybe they should make some effort instead to get along with their neighbors instead of angering them to the point they may force a Military action.
