Everything I could find on this goes back to quoting USA Today. Looks like "reporter s" should be called " repeaters" !

One of the fundamental problems with mass media today. Most, especially online outlets, simply reprint stories issued by other online outlets with no reference to any original source reporting or critical evaluation of the story.
