If this is like a vast majority of other weapon competitions it will either take 10-15 years to see development, testing, acceptance and fielding...or it will be killed off before coming to fruition.

It will fill a niche, to be sure, but it won't replace the 5.56. In fact, it appears it's not intended to replace it in the first place.

Now, I say that as a retired Sailor, and a submariner to boot. So I'll defer to the my brothers and sisters in the Army and Marines on the specific roles these both are intended to fulfill.

But I am nominally familiar with the history and development of the 5.56 and the 7.62 x 51mm
