I thought the whole thing with having 5.56 and 7.62 ammunition was to keep as a NATO standard? With a new round type, different from allied countries, where does that leave us on the battlefield when a unit runs out of ammo and allied personnel cannot assist with ammo due to the difference in caliber? Are we to propose to insert a new ammunition caliber for NATO use altogether?

True. That was why the program was calling for a 7.62 replacement for the M16/M4 rifle. This introduction of a new caliber rifle sounds like an effort not only to upgrade our weapons but introduce something new to our allies that they might invest in and buy; in otherwords, part marketing strategy.
