The OH-58D Kiowa is a scout helicopter and the AH-64 Apache is a lethal attack helicopter SP5 Mark Kuzinski. This is similar to what happened prior to WWII with horse cavalry scout squadrons becoming armored cavalry squadrons. Horses and Kiowas are more agile and flexible than armored cavalry vehicles and Apaches.
1. However the Army is moving to put 30-mm cannon on ground scout vehicles so transforming a Kiowa squadron to an Apache squadron seems reasonable.
2. The 82nd Airborne is highly mobile but has less inherent firepower than the infantry, armored cavalry and armored units and the additional firepower of the AH-64 squadron could help to save the day in a firefight.
3. Certainly reducing the number of major systems helps streamline maintenance since the few unique systems the easier they will be to support.
4. The Kiowas can readily be used for Foreign Military Sales (FMS) and the existent spares and unique maintenance assets could be part of an FMS deal.

Dumbest thing ever conceived. Take the one airframe that NEVER missed making their operational readiness rate. They flew 800,000+ combat flight hours (doubling other combat aircraft) and were the most requested convoy security aircraft (bread and butter for IEDs). It was the only aircraft that could have a pilot lean out with an M-4 and surgically remove Mr Mihajji from a crowd of civilians when the only other option is launching rockets, hellfires, and 30mm. It was the stealth aircraft compared to the other platforms and when the Strykers went in fast and furious at 0300 they could catch the big meanies sleeping. It was the most inexpensive aircraft to operate and had 45 years worth of spare parts for the airframe. It has been on the chopping block since before it was even a OH-58D but Desert Storm called for armed reconnaissance, so Bell Textron obliged. After that it went up against the Commanche. $500 billion dollars later the one operational Commanche went directly into the aviation museum at Fort Rucker while they decided to stick with what they had, but make some changes to where the optics were located. It took no time to develop the OH-58F which took off Kenney (from South Park) from the top of our rotor system and put them under the chin. It was absolute perfection.......then they retired all 470 and put them in the aircraft graveyard here in Tucson. IN ADDITION to that fiasco, they only kept 1/3 of the aviators who flew those 800,000+ flight hours. Since they already had the Apaches, there were not nearly enough slots to retrain them. All those pilots with all that combat experience were shown the door.so pardon my French when I saw, F&@ the POG bean counters at the Pentagon! They weakened an already weak military.
