China would cease to be an effective fighting force within a week. Russia...not so much.

Sgt Wayne Wood - Giant standing armies are relatively worthless in the face of massive Tomahawk strikes, particularly when they're not even on the same continent as their enemy. However, the definition implied by my statement patently does not include occupying China -- merely shutting them down from effective aggression outside their borders.

The purpose of an effective bombardment has several aspects. 1) destroying the enemies ability to wage war 2) destroying his WILL to make war... there have been notable failures, Hitler's Germany, North Vietnam, Afghanistan... successes? Iraq, Japan. But in the case of Japan, we nuked 'em. Is that an acceptable option when the opponent has nukes?

Sgt Wayne Wood - No, because there's no world that exists where we nuke China and Russia doesn't nuke us. However, we would control the air and sea within days, in totality. So long as occupation wasn't our goal (and why would it be?), China'd be done...unless THEY turned to nukes. That's a whole other ballgame.

Agreed... we still are the big dog when it comes to projection of power & control of the blue water... i am extremely hesitant to divine what the middle kingdom would or would not do... they have their own ideas that may not be .... rational? From our perspective.
