Thanks TSgt Joe C. for reminding us that Barney Clark died on March 23, 1983 after receiving a Jarvik-7 heart the previous year. My own father was the second oldest person to undergo a human heart transplant when he went through that procedure in 1992. he survived until, October 1995 when his second heart failed.
Now artificial hearts are showing progress. the hope is that within a few years artificial heart technology will have advanced to the point that instead of an interim step it will be the solution. At that point, families will not need to wait for a suitable match to die to have a heart transplant.
