Maduro is employing the strategy that has sustained the dictatorship in North Korea for several decades. Use fear of an outside aggressor (US) to divert attention from the failures of their nation and unite them in common cause. Interestingly, Climate Change is the diversion of choice here at home.

1stSgt Nelson Kerr - You don't have to invade someone to be dangerous. And yes, I am aware of how the US does business around the world. Just because my drug-dealing neighbor hasn't invaded my home doesn't make him any less dangerous.

Recall "He might be a son of a bitch, but he's OUR son of a bitch." That's how the US really does business with regards to whom we support.

#34 War is good for business.
#35 Peace is good for business.

SSG(P) (Join to see) - But you do have to invade or provide active help to put mass murdering dictators in place, or to b rob a country blind, and we have a history, a long history of doing both. do the names Batista, Trujillo, Papa Doc and Son, Noriega, Stroessner, Pinochet ring any bells. Most of those guys make the cartels look Quakers.

1stSgt Nelson Kerr - Technically no. Remember the air war over Yugoslavia? We destroyed a country with air power alone. But the other guys, yes.

Noriega was slightly different because he was threatening to expose the CIA's drug-running escapades south of the border if he didn't get a bigger cut. 18 hours later, the 82nd was down there, kicking doors. But note that Noriega was "imprisoned" in Miami, kept away from contact with the outside world until his death.

The unfortunate truth is that if we don't emplace puppet leaders, other people will. It is far better to have your own guy where you want him than have the other guy's guy where you don't want him. Whether you like it or not, that's the reality.
