[1] Afghanistan was being governed by its traditional form of government (a Monarchy);
[2] the photographs were taken whilst both the US and Russia were competing to see which of them could give the Afghans the most material support; and
[3] the photographs were taken before the Pakistani government decided to destabilize the Afghan government for its own purposes.
