When I was a MSG in charge of a Surgical Services product line (all clinics and services to do with anyone receiving surgery at 121 General Hospital in Korea), I had a SSG who was very inexperienced as a leader because in her low-density MOS she hadn't supervised many Soldiers. So I was sitting in while she did performance-improvement counseling for one of her Soldiers who had been messing up (and behaving erratically). We had role-played in advance, but I had to stop the counseling when he made a threat of violence. I took him out to the hallway to talk and checked for weapons, and made him give me the knife he was carrying. Then I took him to the ER and had him admitted. Luckily I had a pretty good relationship with my Soldiers and they did have good discipline in general, so when I told him to hand over the knife he just did it immediately.

Any first sergeant here ever worry about their Airman in front of the commander receiving non-judicial punishment?

Precisely what I was thinking. Don't get me wrong, this is the worst tragedy to a great person I'm sure, but I always have to question why? As a MTI here, I believe the leadership here is so toxic, it seems every CC is salivating at the opportunity to give some NJP. it seems to be a career booster down here. What's the root cause of this whole debacle? The MTI sex scandal back in 2012? We need to get over that already and start investing in the development and care for our fellow Airmen. not saying this is the case but if we could figure out what drive a man to this level of madness, to save lives, it's worth a look.
