At-sea disasters came during ‘the most basic of operations,’ Pacific Fleet CO says

'Pour encourager les autres' is a quote from Voltaire's 'Candide', often used in the context of political punishment and persecution. The full quote is "dans ce pays-ci, il est bon de tuer de temps en temps un amiral pour encourager les autres" ('in england, it is good, from time to time, to kill an admiral, to encourage the others'), and refers indirectly to the unfortunate fate of Admiral John Byng, who was executed in 1756 at the outbreak of the Seven Years' War.

Relieving an Admiral may play well in the media. But it does NOT address the SYSTEMIC FAILURES in LEADERSHIP, TRAINING, and OPERATIONS that resulted in two high tech, state of the art, warships colliding with merchant vessels in less then 4 months. Something is drastically wrong here. The Navy needs to figure this out quick and initiate measures to keep this from happening again.
