Fighting insurgencies are made the more difficult if the locals support them and the Center of Gravity is their ideology. The Germans found out the hard way that urban fighting has it's own characteristics and risks at Stalingrad.

It was interesting how kind of different these lessons learned were - from those had seen elsewhere. Did you see the couple am talking about Ken? They are not something in the usual -- ie not the night vision aspects. lol

What about the couple? I took a counterinsurgency class that I found interesting. I usually use the Clausewitz Trinity (people, military, government) as a rough model and apply appropriate Centers of Gravity and TTPs. It was a fascinating course as there are many ways to fight insurgencies. The British were able to get the IRA to the negotiating table through superior targets which allowed them to kill the IRA leaders. In Peru the locals villagers were given weapons to fight the Shining Path insurgency and the regular army would swoop in to finish the fight.
I have often thought what is the nexus of Vietnam with Afghanistan. Here are my conclusions:
- It's hard to find the enemy
- The locals provide support to the enemy
- The terrain favors the enemy
- We can't change their ideology
- We can't stop their logistical support
- Corrupt governments
What I find interesting is using the Trinity model to describe George Washington's and Moa's revolutions and the similar steps they used to achieve victory.
Thanks for letting me ramble lol
