With all the men and women who have gone AWOL over the years for a variety of different reasons, should this still be newsworthy? When I was in AIT we had a platoon size of soldiers, male and female, who were holdovers or discharged due to being AWOL. I feel this will be create backlash towards women in combat roles, but that's just the opinion of a POG Specialist.

I don't know why this is newsworthy. Folks go AWOL all the time.
When I was in the Army, no one in any of my units went AWOL. I knew about 4-5 guys (and 1 female) from high school that all went AWOL from the Marines though. Since I have been in the Air Force, the only person I knew that went AWOL was an officer that we had to pick-up.
Its pretty common for folks to go home and not want to come back.

It will make fodder, but if we look at how many men went AWOL in the same position around the same time then we can properly compare. Politicians will spin how they want whether it is a story or not
