SSG Carlos Madden We've put ourselves between a rock and a hard place. Afghanistan is so tribal, I don't think we'll ever see a stable government; at least not one like we'd like to see. All the leaders have their own hide at the foremost importance & will be quick to do whatever they can in order to preserve that, even if it means secretly making things more difficult for us.
Perhaps the only way to get out of this thing is to make the neighbors step up. Make the UN step up - we've done the heavy lifting, now you can re-rack the weights.

It's not a good situation and I am concerned about the impact it will have on the military's morale in the long term. Continuously sending ourselves halfway across the world with no clear, consistent mission and only "bad" and "not-as-bad" as possible outcomes (i.e. no possibility of victory) is a bad position for our war fighters to be in.

"I don't think we'll ever see a stable government; at least not one like we'd like to see." True. It may be that a stable government, even a totalitarian, yet contained one in Afghanistan ends up being our "best" option.

SSG Carlos Madden - sadly, I think you're right. We can "deal" with an iron-fisted ruler, so long as they maintain control & don't cause trouble - which iron-fisted rulers in that area seem hard pressed to do for the duration of their reign (Saddam, Assad, etc). Trade the Devil for a demon?
