I worked in CBP, and when vets are deported it's a very hard thing. Unfortunately some veterans commit crimes, and some are LPR's. Without going into a dissertation, with the exception of an expedited removal, or refusal of entry, every immigration case goes to a judge. In the veteran case, DC has to approve the "prosecution" before it even gets that far. And keep in mind that many veterans are in ICE and CBP. Call it green courtesy or what you will, but if I had a vet that stole food for his/her family.... I'd pay the bill and make sure that vet got help. Im reminded of a Iraq vet who is in federal pen for working with cartels, somethings just suck.

I don't think being a veteran should gave anyone a free pass from the enforcement of our laws over a nonveteran guilty of the same crimes. The real issue is whether the way the law about green card holders is written. Should green card holders really be subject to deportation for such minor crimes? Maybe the law should be changed to felony offenses only. But right now, the way the law is written a green card holder can indeed be deported for almost any minor mistake. That's what needs to be fixed, rather than giving veterans a pass on the law while still deporting many civilian green card holders for the same offenses.

While I am thankful for everyone who serves, I don't think service usurps the law. There are legal ways into this country. I'm my great grandfather could save his entire life and spend 3 weeks on a ship crossing the ocean to leaf ally enter this country and then serve in the military, then so could people today. I don't feel any kindred sense of belonging to other veterans who break the law, and so I don't here either.
I realize there are some different cases for different people on the matter, but generally speaking I'm just not really feeling that bad for anyone in this situation.
Just my 2 cents...
