To be fair, I've heard this argument raised many times. The church (all churches) have been tarred with this brush. The space program was vilified for "shooting all those dollars into space", money that could have been better spent housing and feeding the homeless, educating children, providing health care to the sick, etc., etc., etc... Same with money spent on the military. However, we aren't really burning money on an altar or shooting it into space or dumping it into holes in the water, are we? No, that money is spent in paying wages to wage earners who pay taxes. It is spent on purchasing things that are made by people who earn wages and pay taxes. It's the circle of economic life. And what do we get in the end. Churches are places where people worship, praying for good in the world. Some even pray for our President to be a better person and make good decisions. (It seems at least half of those prayers are being answered) We have defense. We have health care. We have food, shelter, and clothing that we've earned with wages and money to provide charity for those who cannot provide for themselves. As you may know by now, I am a spiritual person. You probably don't know that I don't attend church or any other religious gathering. I believe in a supreme being, a creator and law giver, and my relationship is personal (my own business). I don't need fancy edifices such as this, but I still appreciate them, their beauty and their purpose. They provide a sense of the sacred for those who cannot imagine it for themselves. Nothing wrong in that, is there?

CPT Jack Durish, absolutely not. I don't begrudge anyone to not believe that connection they have with their God. I consider myself to be a spiritual person. I think that for the most part everyone finds a connection with their God in their own way. I never felt that connection in a church. It wasn't until I (before I knew about my Cherokee roots) I went to a Native American gathering. For the first time in my life I felt a peace that I had never felt before. I love having theological discussions, as long as we are both willing to listen and not try to preach. I attended 12 Step Fellowship, and this opened my eyes to see that I just had to believe in a God greater than myself. So for a while that fellowship was what I used.
As far as wasting money on the space program. Well heck I am glad to see Private Industry stepping up. I was awed by the Space X launch. Just think where we can go. I am hopeful that we return to the moon before I cross over. Just thinking that my smartphone I am using is more powerful than the computers in the lunar lander. I was fortunate to be at the Boy Scout National Jamboree when Neal Armstrong took that historic step. There were TVs set up all around the camp. Ok sorry just got carried away. Haven't slept much and I am getting slap happy.

Cpl Scott McCarroll - Everyone alive at the time of the Moon Landing has a story to tell and they're all worth listening to. It was an amazing point in history for all mankind, not just Americans. I believe that everyone, ever our enemies, watched in awe and all felt part of it. We all were part of it. Sad that those not alive, living before and after, missed it...
