I don't think there's an easy way to take a city, and this situation is especially hard. Is there a signed agreement (as if that matters in this part of the world) between Kurdish forces and Iraqi forces on the disposition of the city after the battle is won? Assume Kurdish forces have achieved most of the success, and also have the greatest losses, and the UN is claiming allied atrocities and failure to allow aid to civilians, and the results are on CNN every day. Have we forgotten the conflict resolution part (again)?

Agreed. Seen almost the same thing during Najaf and Fullujah. Lots of moving parts...
