Gen. Grant attacked along the natural land bridge between the combatant's capital cities, thus he fought along the exact same territory from 1861 where the northern forces were repelled at Manassas. Gen. McClellan had the one great innovation to attack up Virginia's middle peninsula by amphibious landings near Williamsburg. That strategy became discredited by leaving Washington D.C. lightly protected. This conundrum for Gen. Grant sprang up from the poor fighting record of all the prior Northern generals who had failed to advance one mile along the road from Washington D.C. to Richmond. General Grant corrected the situation.
