"This song was originally written for Cliff Richard, but he wasn't making an album at the time, so Bee Gees recorded it themselves.
According to Robin Gibb, the idea of this song is that "words can make you happy or words can make you sad".
"Words" was released as a single in January 1968. It was dedicated for their first manager Robert Stigwood. Barry Gibb stayed at his place when this song was written. Gibb recalled during a 1996 VH1 Storytellers TV show, "I didn't know it wasn't on an album — that's strange how it used to work in those days. We used to bang singles out one after another."
